Celebrate Holidays and Heroes with the Library

Celebrate Holidays and Heroes with the Library
Come celebrate heroes and the winter holidays with 12 gifts from the Littlestown Library.
Starting Dec. 3, 2014, our 1st and 2nd gifts await you with lights glowing bright.  Our Library Tree shares a festive spirit, bidding friendly welcome to passersby.  The Library Train travels its tracks, spinning new stories of holiday rails by the tree.
Gifts 3 and 4 arrive on Saturday Dec. 13, 2014. In the morning, read your favorite holiday story to a friendly KPETS support dog.  Make holiday decorations with the Littlestown National Arts Honor Society. Add your favorite to the Library Tree!
In November, gifts 5 and 6 kicked off new library programs to celebrate American Heroes.  On Nov. 9, 2014, the courageous history of “Teens in the Civil War” came alive with re-enactors, exciting tales and ‘hands-on’ experiences with uniforms and gear for children and families.  Our Nov. 11, 2014 Veterans Day program “Remembering World War II” honored the spirit and memories of all who served. Dwight Daley and family shared his father’s WWII service, adventures and mementos.  Littlestown locals added their anecdotes of the war years. A hobby collector showcased the unique use of women’s jewelry to support war-time morale. The “V-pin”, each design containing victory elements (such as V is Morse code), was proudly worn with hope, determination and courageous spirit throughout the tumultuous war years.
In the New Year, gifts 7, 8 and 9 further celebrate American Heroes.  On Saturday, Jan. 10, 2015 experience the American Revolution’s “Soldiers in the Snow” at Valley Forge.  Hear tales, handle uniforms and gear of the troops who fought with General Washington. On Saturday, March 14, 2015, celebrate the history of women in World War II, on front lines as nurses, resistance fighters, auxiliary military personnel, or on home front as defense industry workers, military clerks, and homemakers.  On Saturday, May 9, 2015, learn the unique role and service of the American military cavalry. Hear stories and get a ‘hands on’ experience with this historical equine tradition.
Gifts 10 and 11 arrive with spring.  On Saturday, Feb. 14, 2014, celebrate “old fashioned” fun and games with your Valentine.  Bring your favorite board game, cards or game activities – but no electronics.  (Rubik’s Cube or Spirograph anyone?) Enjoy a de-stressing afternoon of strategy and gaming off the grid!  Come get your green thumb going on Saturday, April 11, 2015 with the Gardening Club.  Children can plant their first flower seed, start squash or zucchini for an “endless” veggie summer. Start a “Butterfly garden” – a nature-loving project for the whole family!
The best and final gift keeps on giving.  Come to the library, pick out your favorite from our entertainment cornucopia.  Have a new e-reader to illuminate your mind?  Pluck an e-book from our popular 3M Cloud Library. Prefer an audio experience?  Use OneClickdigital and listen on a variety of mobile devices. Fancy a snappy tune to jazz up your day?  Download up to 5 each week from Freegal.  Are pulp mysteries your ‘calorie free’ treat?  Stop on by to find the perfect book to read long past midnight.
The weather outside is frightful, but the Littlestown Library staff want to make winter a little easier, more entertaining and enjoyable for you.  Come by soon, before the train leaves the library station!
