Spring is on its Way

Spring is on its Way
I imagine we’re all looking forward to spring, and the beautiful weather that we feel we deserve after the long, snowy winter.  Some of us will be working outside on gardens and yards, and won’t we appreciate being able to drive about with no worries of ice or snow?
Your local library has many books to spur new thoughts on how to reconfigure your outside space.   Try the 2013 Straw Bale Gardens: the Breakthrough Method for Growing Vegetables Anywhere, Earlier and with No Weeding by Joel Karsten.  Can you imagine no weeding?  According to this book, plant a garden on a straw bale, add a soaking hose and some fertilizer, and as the straw decompensates it provides a fertile environment for growth.  How about no mowing?   Lawn Gone!: Low-maintenance, Sustainable, Attractive Alternatives for Your Yard by Pam Penick, with its many photos of yards redesigned to be beautiful and easy, could help you revision your yard.
Speaking of driving, at the end of March, the Littlestown Library will be hosting two programs led by AARP volunteer instructors, for Pennsylvania drivers who are 55 and older.  Drivers, providing they have clean driving records, become eligible for a 5% discount on their car insurance for 3 years after completion.  Instructors will speak about aging and its relation to driving, giving strategies to cope in the best possible way with various driving scenarios.  First time participants take an 8 hour course.  The first 4 hours are set for March 28th from 12:30-4:30 p.m., and the second part occurs March 29th from 10:30-2:30 p.m.  Participants needing the 4 hour refresher course can attend on March 27th from 2:30-6:30 p.m.  Pre-registration is required, and each class is $20.  If interested, please contact Martha Johns, Adams County Office for Aging, at 334-9296.
If you are in the mood for spring-cleaning, the Friends of the Littlestown Library are perpetually preparing for the next book sale.  Bring your unwanted books anytime the library is open.  The proceeds from the sale benefit the Littlestown Library.  The only books not accepted are encyclopedias, textbooks, and Reader’s Digest condensed books.  They also accept DVDs.  The next sale is slated for May 16th and 17th, and will be held at the Bethel Assembly of God Church in Littlestown.
Computer classes have started again at the library.  April’s class will be An Introduction to Windows 7 on Wednesday, April 16th at 4:00 p.m.  Classes are free.  Please call or stop by to reserve a spot.
The Littlestown Library (359-0446) is located at 232 North Queen Street, and is open Tuesdays and Thursday, from 2 to 8 p.m., Wednesdays and Fridays, from noon to 6 p.m., and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
